CRAWLER’S CHAOS: Nightbeast (1982)

Posted in Nightbeast (1982) [Creepy Crawler] on 09/10/2010 by Dave J. Wilson

FIRST THING TO DO WITH THIS TROMA FILM IS TO LOOK AT THE COVER, OR ANY PICTURES YOU MAY CHANCE UPON; A REPTILE LIKE ALIEN IN A SILVER 70’S DISCO SUIT, HOLDING A LASER, PLEASURES YOUR EYES. THIS FILM DOES EXACTLY WHAT IT SHOWS ON THE TIN – IT’S AN ALIEN, AND IT DOESN’T STOP BLASTING PEOPLE WHILST WEARING A SILVER SUIT.

I’M SERIOUS, WITHIN THE FIRST MINUTES OF THE FILM, THE BEAST HAS LEFT HIS SHIP, WHICH HAS LANDED IN NOWHERE FARMLAND USA, AND HE’S JUST SHOOTING AT ANYTHING THAT MOVES WHILST FLASHING BIG TEETH. THE LOCALS GET IT, THE COPS GET IT, AND TWO LITTLE KIDS (THE DIRECTOR’S OWN SPAWN INCIDENTLY), GET IT AS WELL. THAT’S THE STANDARD PLOT FOR THIS: NO TWISTS, NO FLASHY EFFECTS, AND NO COMPLEX CONVERSATIONS INTO WHAT THE CREATURE IS. TRUTHFULLY, WE DON’T CARE, BECAUSE HE’S BLASTING EVERYONE AND THERE’S A DECENT AMOUNT OF GORE FOR GOOD MEASURE. THE SURVIVORS WORK OUT ELECTRICITY MAY STOP HIM, SO HAVE TO BADLY ACT A WAY THEY CAN GET CLOSE ENOUGH TO THE SILVER SUIT.

IF YOU HAPPEN TO GET THE RELEASE WITH THE DOCUMENTARY, THE INTERVIEWS CONTAINED ABOUT DIRECTOR DON DOHLER’S CAREER, WILL REALLY WARM YOU TO HIS STYLE AND HIS WAY OF DOING THINGS. IT ALSO COVERS HIS OTHER RELEASES SUCH AS FIEND (I’LL BE REVIEWING THAT SOON), AND OTHERS BEFORE HIS DEATH. TO BE FAIR, NOTHING HAS EQUALLED THIS MASTERPIECE OF LOW BUDGET ACTION. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE TO GET BORED BY THIS FILM, OR TRULY LAUGH AT ITS AWKWARDNESS, BECAUSE IT’S PLAIN TO SEE THAT DON HAD A LARGE HEART AND A LOVE FOR THE GENRE.
